Yin yoga is a slow-paced style of yoga, with postures that are held for long periods (1-5 minutes). Yin stresses connective tissues (tendons, fascia and ligaments) with the goal of increasing circulation in the joints and improving flexibility. Meditation and mindfulness are key components of this practice.  Restorative yoga is similar to Yin. The use of props (blankets, bolsters, blocks, straps) make restorative yoga an even more restful than Yin. Both practices are perfect for helping you release stress, find stillness and spend some quiet time with yourself. It’s all about balance. Black and white. Hot and cold. Yin balances out your active Yang classes.

Yoga is on the rise. In 2012, 20.4m US adults practiced yoga. In 2016 that number had jumped to 36.7m. Yoga has left the realm of lentil eating ‘alternatives’ and soundly positioned itself as mainstream. For good reason. The benefits of this ancient practice are many. Google “benefits of yoga” and immerse yourself. No matter what your current level of fitness or flexibility, you can take up yoga* and begin your journey.

Therapy rollers (trigger point, foam rollers) are used for self massage. They help soothe tight, sore areas of musculature and connective tissue. This process of rolling out tight muscles and relieving tension is known as self myofascial release (SMR). Sometimes known as “poor man’s massage” because it’s what massage therapists have been doing for years. Rolling out your fascia (a layer of fibrous connective tissue that surrounds all your muscles) will result in increased blood flow, lubricated healthy fascia, increased muscular range of motion and a release of sore tight spots.
