Is Yoga For Me?

Yoga is for everyone. It’s that simple.

A quick look around social media will leave you thinking that yoga belongs to The Young, The Beautiful and The Flexible! That’s it’s all about impressive arm balances and uber backbends. It’s not. This portrayal of the yoga world is inaccurate and represents a very small section of genetically privileged.

Krishnamacharya said it beautifully ..“If you can breathe, you can do yoga”

If yoga’s hijacking by social media raises awareness and increases participation, I’m all for it. However, I suspect it deters more people than it inspires. Many have told me they will come to class once they gain some flexibility. Actually, it’s the other way around; you come to class to gain that flexibility.

No matter your age, weight, fitness, flexibility, strength or even your wardrobe. Yoga is for you.

There’s a reason it’s been around for thousands of years. It has many health benefits, both physical and mental. It meets you at whatever condition you are in when you decide to begin*, and it evolves with you as you as you gain strength and flexibility. Progress is tangible and you can do it for life. Once you’ve learned about safe alignment, you can even do it at home. No special clothes or equipment needed (although I would say that a yoga mat is a helpful addition).

*medical conditions notwithstanding — yoga teachers do not claim to be medical professionals
